HVAC Cost Index: What It Costs in 92 US Cities

We ranked 92 major US cities by the typical installed price of full ac system replacement (3-ton, installed), adjusting national price ranges by local labor costs from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here's where it costs the most — and the least.

National typical
$9,250
$5,500–$13,000
Most expensive
San Jose, CA
$11,025 · 19% vs US
Least expensive
Little Rock, AR
$8,150 · -12% vs US
How we calculated this. We start from national HVAC price ranges triangulated across industry sources. Because only the labor portion of a job tracks local wages — equipment and materials are priced roughly nationally — we scale each city by the local mean wage for the relevant trade occupation (U.S. BLS OEWS) applied to an estimated 45% labor share, not the whole price. Figures are typical installed costs for a standard residential job and exclude unusual site conditions.
National pricing reviewed 2026-05-11 · BLS wage data 2026-05-08 · Use these as planning estimates and confirm with a local quote.
